Redefining Upset

It’s crunch time, well, at least for me it is. I’m currently 96 hours away from my first final of my spring semester here at Cal. It’s safe to say that I along, with thousands of others students, are pretty stressed out. There are deadlines, review sessions, office hours, and study groups to attend. It’s pretty funny (in my opinion) just how many things can go absolutely wrong when you’re stressed out. It just seems that upsets are exponentially growing during the build up to a major event like finals. So many of our expectations are not met: we expect our roommates not to be loud and respectful of our studying, we expect the coffee shop to have at least one open seat, we expect to have time to eat and finally and perhaps my biggest expectation, we...

Super Bowl Recap: Surprising Packages

Resident 360 church Sports Commentator Churro here, As most of you are aware (if you’re not I apologize in advance) last night the New York Giants led by star quarterback Eli Manning beat the New England Patriots 21 to 17 to win Super Bowl 46. The hype for the Super Bowl was built to a fever pitch as most Super Bowls are but this one was special, it was more personal than most football games, this was a rematch of the 2008 Super Bowl. The Patriots (arguably the better of the two teams on paper) were looking forward to avenge the shock defeat inflicted upon them back in 2008. The Giants, who surprised everyone again by getting to the Super Bowl by overcoming the best team in the NFL the Green Bay Packers then following it up with a win over the 49ers, were going...

First Impressions

I’m pretty excited. Tomorrow some of my spiritual family is coming to visit me here in Berkeley. What I mean by spiritual family is that I grew up with these people in church and I’ve always considered them more than friends, more like family. My little sister is coming and it’s been a while since I’ve seen her and it’s always fun being in the big brother role, having grown up in a large family it’s pretty natural for me. I’m particularly proud of her because I have seen her grow up and I know she has great potential to do anything she’s passionate about, she’s a smart kid. When I first became her big brother I was pretty nervous because I wanted to be a good influence on her especially because I knew she has a big future. I went around talking...

Oh The Humanity!

Oh The Humanity!

I got into Psychology because I love people; that’s actually exactly what I wrote in my UC personal statement. Last semester I had to come up with an original research project for my psych class. Working together with a group we thought it would be a good idea to conduct an experiment comparing the introspection of psychology students and other Cal students. We acted under the assumption that being taught human behavior and regularly analyzing it would cause most psych students to be more introspective than your average Cal students. We presented the idea to our Graduate Student Instructor (GSI). He immediately shot it down because he believed our proposal was incorrect – he believed students studying in the humanities would be more...

Welcome to the Family!

Welcome to the Family!

One of my favorite routines before my Social Psychology class is to grab some food and sit down in the courtyard located in front of Dwinelle Hall. On Wednesday, I walked on over to Chipotle to grab a chicken burrito and as I was walking in I looked over and saw someone I recognized. I wasn’t entirely sure it was the person I thought it was. As I slowly walked over, ready to ask a question that could make a situation really awkward should it not turn out to be the person I thought it was. Turns out it was, it was my high school Calculus teacher. I walked up, introduced myself, accidentally breaking the conversation he was having with his family (a horrible habit of mine). We chatted for a bit and immediately he asked, “You go to Cal?!” I replied, “Yes, I...
