The Steps of Sproul Hall

“Welcome, everyone, to the Chi Alpha, Christian testimonies night. We are here on the steps of Sproul Hall to share some stories from our lives about Jesus and how he has impacted us as Christians by his love.” These were some of the introductory remarks on Monday evening from one of our students who was emceeing the event. We had a few signs indicating what we were doing and we even had a protestor silently holding a sign saying that it was OK to not believe in Jesus. My mind was already in full swing, thinking about what I might do. Well, I’ll probably go up to share – I mean I am on staff with Chi Alpha here so I’ll at least be ready if that’s how things work out. I was fine with the idea of public speaking, even speaking...

What Mark Zuckerberg Reminded Me about College Ministry

About a month ago I was enjoying a nice steak dinner outside at a picnic table with a friend from college when this little bee flew over to us. Then another. For whatever reason, these bees had decided that the steak on our plates was the single most important thing in the world. I was annoyed, but I can’t blame them because that steak was good. This dinner was supposed to be about catching up and not defending our meals from some bees though, so we walked back into Facebook to find a table. Well, to be honest I jogged a bit to get one of those bees away from me for good. Determined little bug… We walked back inside and sat down at a small table in the large, half-filled dining room and continued our conversation. It was probably only about five minutes...

Heaven is a Multi-Ethnic Community

Heaven is a Multi-Ethnic Community

You can travel to almost any country in the world and with only a few exceptions you will find Christians there. No matter what your ethnic, religious, or cultural background, there are followers of Jesus who look like you and share your heritage.   It’s pretty amazing to think about.   2000 years ago a man named John was alone on the island of Patmos in the Mediterranean Sea, exiled for his faith in a dead Jewish rabbi who supposedly came back from the dead. There he received a startling vision from God about the last days and the coming kingdom of heaven. He put this vision down into words in a book we now call the book of Revelation.   In the vision, he sees the not-so-dead Jewish rabbi, Jesus Christ the Son of God. One of these powerful...

The Sproul Experience

The Sproul Experience

As the Fall 2011 outreach officer of the Chi Alpha Christian campus ministry in UC Berkeley, one of my essential jobs is to table on Sproul Plaza. Sproul Plaza is one of the most popular sites on the UC Berkeley campus right in front of Sproul Hall extending from Bancroft Ave. to the Sather Gate. Especially during the Fall and Spring semesters, Sproul Plaza is filled with two isles of tables representing student organizations. If you walk down Sproul Plaza (especially during Welcome Week, August 22-26) between 10 A.M. and 2 P.M., you are guaranteed to be bombarded with plenty of students passing out fliers that advertise their student organizations that are usually religious, academic, political, ethnic, or consist of some sort of entertainment like acting or...

Diversity On Campus

Diversity On Campus

Today we went with our Chi Alpha students to Stanford for a one-day training on college ministry. We had a great time, learned a lot, and had our thoughts stimulated toward how to become a vibrant Christian community on campus.   At the very end we entered a time of prayer at our separate tables.   In the middle of our prayer time Riley, a student from Santa Clara University, felt like he had a vision from the Lord to share with us. In it he saw a glowing white tree in the middle of campus. Each branch appeared different, like completely different kinds of tree all sharing the same trunk and root system.   Riley said that the root system was the love of God, penetrating deep into the ground and supporting the rest of the tree unseen. All the...

4 Things Christians And Atheists Have In Common

Can faith co-exist side by side with skepticism? Can a Christian group peacefully share their table with an atheist group for the better part of a day? What if Christians and Atheists actually had more in common than not. What if they were more united than they were separated?
