Now that summer has almost arrived we can enjoy longer days, and warmer days for that matter, which means…it’s time to change up our wardrobe. Yes, you heard me; it’s time for shorts, t-shirts, and sandals!
As I grew into my teens, I developed a huge liking for clothes and all the designer brands that constitute “fashion”, such as Abercrombie, Nordstrom, etc. It’s at any of these stores, and others of the same sort, that you might be able to find me on weekends. But please don’t misinterpret my habit (or perhaps obsession) with shopping to that of someone who maxes out credit cards unconsciously. In fact, most of the “shopping” that I do never goes beyond just trying on a couple shirts or a pair of pants. Notice, I did not mention the word purchase. However, when I do feel it’s time to buy some new clothes, I make sure the items look good in the fitting room, before I hand over the plastic. If I really like the item, often times I don’t have to think twice about whether or not purchasing it is the right move to make, especially if it’s been awhile. Finally, when I walk out of the store, I should hope to feel satisfied with the fact I won’t be buying clothes until that next season. (Making good use of those fitting rooms and not actually buying anything is how I cope with being a shopaholic for all of you who are still wondering).
Having mentioned the fitting room, and being able to try on that new shirt, reminds me of the passage in Ephesians, chapter 6, where we are told to put on the full armor of God in order to live a life ready and prepared for anything that comes our way: “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand” (New International Version). Analogous to the way our summer attire should equip us during the summer, better preparing us for its heat!
A special friend once told me, “As believers we need to constantly wear the armor of God, and never take it off. We need to be wearing it even in our sleep”. When I think about this, it rings more than true. Because life is so unpredictable, we need to be prepared for anything and everything. Therefore, the armor of God is not something we want to just try on, it’s something that has to be a part of who we are as believers in Jesus Christ.
Next time you do go shopping and find yourself trying on something you might like, the fitting room should be a great reminder to check up on that spiritual armor. I challenge you today to ask yourself if you’ve been wearing your armor. If not, try on that armor and keep it on, as it’s been paid for already. Your salvation depends on it. Lastly, my advice would be to gear up (get it?), because when that spiritual season changes climate, your spiritual armor will do more than any shirt at Nordstrom could ever do for you.

“it’s already been paid for” -best line.
I love where you went this, brilliant!
