Resident 360 church Sports Commentator Churro here,
As most of you are aware (if you’re not I apologize in advance) last night the New York Giants led by star quarterback Eli Manning beat the New England Patriots 21 to 17 to win Super Bowl 46. The hype for the Super Bowl was built to a fever pitch as most Super Bowls are but this one was special, it was more personal than most football games, this was a rematch of the 2008 Super Bowl. The Patriots (arguably the better of the two teams on paper) were looking forward to avenge the shock defeat inflicted upon them back in 2008. The Giants, who surprised everyone again by getting to the Super Bowl by overcoming the best team in the NFL the Green Bay Packers then following it up with a win over the 49ers, were going to have their hands full with a blood-seeking Patriots team led by superstar Tom Brady. But alas the Giants overcame their opponents thanks to a now signature 4th quarter game winning drive by Eli, as predicted by former Colts head coach Tony Dungy during halftime. It was a tough and bitter defeat as the game was a tense affair with neither team having a hold on their opponents.
The star of the show was without a doubt Eli Manning who will once again be known for a famous throw to wide receiver Mario Manningham late into the 4th quarter; a catch that just might usurp his throw to wide receiver David Tyree back in 2008. Eli put on a brilliant display of athleticism and leadership to overcome the Patriots. He crafted play after play in such fashion that showed both intelligence, maturity and suave. He was cool, calm and collected throughout the entire game even during critical moments in the game.
Watching Eli one can easily assume this was a person who handled being in the spotlight well because that’s where he has been his entire life but upon closer inspection of Eli most will find this statement isn’t entirely true. Son of star quarterback Archie Manning and younger brother of future Hall of Famer Peyton, Eli has grown up with the religion that is American Football. Eli has up to this point been considered Peyton’s little brother. Eli has arguably lived in Peyton’s shadow even though on the stats sheet both are superb quarterbacks but the older brother has gotten more press than his little brother. Now with two Super Bowl wins under his belt the tide is changing in Eli’s favor.
Eli’s situation reminds me of a particular biblical character who crafted something more beautiful than an Eli Manning 4th quarter game-winning drive.
“The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil;
For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.”Psalm 23
David was the youngest in his family, so insignificant that his own father didn’t know his name when the prophet came calling for him. He was overshadowed by the abilities and statures of his older brothers. Even though David was not the star of his family he was able to beautifully express the talents which God gave him. David proves that no matter the circumstance, the situation, the title, the lack thereof, God is willing to use anyone. Someone as seemingly insignificant as David was able to write such a beautiful and timeless piece as Psalm 23. Anything that has been created by God has been created for a purpose. There’s hope and purpose for us all, that even though we might not believe ourselves to be anyone significant we have been created and crafted for such a purpose at such a time.

Ha! Oh wow i can’t believe what you did with this blog project. Floored Churro and I believe inspirational commentating may be in your future my friend.
