Voice of a Spy Assassin

What does your voice sound like?

Last week my wife and I went to visit friends at their home.  We’ve known them for probably about a year.  Some might say that we just “click” with them.  Usually when we spend time with them at some point the two girls will congregate together and the men alike will form their own habitat.  Every time I am invited into the ecosystem of masculinity with just me and my friend our conversation seems to drift into a chat about faith in some sort of shape or form.

This particular conversation started as a joke like it often does.  We all had just watched a film together about ordinary people who live secret lives as spy assassins.  My friend started joking saying it’s always people you would never expect.  And jokingly he suggested that I could have a secret life as a spy assassin.

After I assured him that it would be impossible just for the mere fact that I don’t have the physical build, he told me that’s something a spy assassin would say.  He laughed and said “So what does a minister in Berkeley actually ‘do?’”  I told him “We connect creative people to their creator.”  He said, “Ya but what does your weekly schedule look like?”

I tried to explain to him that it looks different every week.  There is no office or cubicle to sit at from 9-5 Monday through Friday.  It’s different than that.  We spend time with people, encourage the team of leaders we have, prepare for events and services, we’re constantly looking for ways to love people.

“Why do you do that?”  He asked.  “Do what?” I said, “Why is that whenever we start talking about something related to your profession it’s like your voice changes.”  I laughed and said “What do you mean?”  He did laugh.  He looked concerned.  He said, “Whenever we start talking about things of faith everything changes, the conversation feels different, your voice slows down and becomes very peaceful.”

I laughed and told him he was crazy.  But that night I thought about it when I was in bed.  He was right.  My demeanor does change when I talk about the things of God.

It changes me.

My hope is that others see that in me and it changes them.  I study culture from a distance and try to kill the enemy when I see him.  I guess I am a spy assassin.
